What is BSP or Brainspotting?

Brainspotting (BSP) is effective for various emotional and somatic conditions. Brainspotting is particularly effective with trauma-based situations, helping to identify and heal underlying trauma that contributes to anxiety, depression, and other behavioral conditions. It can also be used for performance and creativity enhancement. Brainspotting gives the therapist access to both brain and body processes. Its goal is to bypass the conscious, neocortical thinking to access the brain's deeper, subcortical, emotional, and body-based parts. During a BSP session, a therapist holds up a pointer and asks the client to follow its movement while talking through an event or memory. When the client experiences a spike in emotion while looking at a certain focal point and talking about a memory or past trauma. This focal point is noted as a “brainspot.” The therapist can then address the revealed trauma with the client to help them process it.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences (Maxfield, 2019). EMDR therapy has even been superior to Prozac in trauma treatment (Van der Kolk et al., 2007). In EMDR, the therapist waves a finger or baton rapidly before the client, who follows it with his eyes. These swift eye movements are said to loosen knots in one's memory and allow negative thoughts and memories to be favorably reprocessed with minimal guidance from the therapist.
